Orcas Island’s best waterfall hike is 3 miles with 200 feet of climbing, and it passes four named falls

Scheduling flag: Seasonal — confirm still current before publishing. Waterfall flow is lighter outside spring/early summer, and Anacortes–Orcas ferry schedules change by season.

Most people ride the ferry to Orcas Island for the view from the top of Mount Constitution. I’d argue the better reason is the waterfalls tucked into the forest below it.

Moran State Park’s falls trail is a 3-mile round trip with about 200 feet of elevation gain, so it’s a walk in the woods rather than a slog. The trail’s highest point is 690 feet, and it passes Cascade Falls, Rustic Falls, Cavern Falls, and Hidden Falls.

What the hike is actually like

Think mossy forest, the sound of water before you see it, and a path that gently rolls instead of climbing. Four falls in 3 miles means you’re never far from the next payoff, which makes this a great pick if your hiking group has a mix of energy levels.

Dogs are allowed on a leash. There’s also a much shorter option: a roughly half-mile out-and-back from the Mount Constitution Road parking lot gets you to Cascade Falls if you only have an hour.

Go in October with the right expectations

Washington State Parks says these falls are most impressive in spring and early summer. In mid-fall they run lighter, so you’re trading thundering water for quieter trails and moodier light.

My tip: aim for a day after a good rain, when the creeks have some life in them. And bring a layer, because the forest holds the chill.

Turn it into a full Orcas day

Moran covers 5,252 acres, so there’s plenty more to do once your legs are warmed up. Cascade Lake has a 2.7-mile, fairly level loop trail around it, plus a swimming beach and boat, kayak, canoe, and paddleboard rentals in season.

Want a bigger view? Mount Constitution is the highest point in the San Juan Islands at 2,409 feet, with a stone tower that looks out toward the Cascades and Olympics. Pair it with the falls and you’ve covered both the forest floor and the sky.

Getting there and staying over

You’ll reach Orcas by ferry from Anacortes, so check the Washington State Ferries schedule before you plan your day. You’ll also need a Discover Pass to park, since Moran is a Washington State Parks site.

The park has 124 standard campsites and 6 primitive hiker-biker sites. Reservations are advised from May 15 to September 15, and the rest of the year sites are first-come, first-served.

So, would you rather chase the big spring flow, or have the trail nearly to yourself in the fall? Tell us which you’d pick in the comments.

Trip tips: grab a rental car to get out here, lock in your hotel before the good rooms are gone, or skip both and book a camper van instead.
